Two pedestrians hit in separate crashes in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Two pedestrians were seriously injured in separate crashes in Colorado Springs Friday evening, according to police.

Police said the first crash happened around 6:45 p.m. at the intersection of Chelton Road and Fountain Boulevard. Northbound Chelton Road was closed for almost two hours while police investigated the crash.

The second crash happened just before 8 p.m. on South Nevada Avenue near East St. Elmo Avenue. Police said a pedestrian was illegally crossing South Nevada when he was hit by a vehicle. Police suspect the pedestrian was under the influence of alcohol. The driver of the vehicle was not charged.

UPDATE (February 23 at 1:47 p.m.): The pedestrian hit on South Nevada Avenue has died from his injuries. He is identified as Norberto Mercado, 65, of Colorado Springs.
