Pueblo County students test STEM skills

PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo. — From robots and rubber band powered cars, students from Pleasant View Middle School and Vineland Middle School got a taste for STEM; science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

“I’ve been working with computers pretty much my whole life, since I was 7 years old, I kind of was interested in computers,” said Mark Hedrick, a junior at Pueblo County High School.

It’s part of the second annual Pueblo County Technology Student Association regional competition. It answers the often asked question of, “why do I need math?”

“Well you need that because if you wanna do this in your design, how do you figure those angles, how do you figure the buoyancy point?’ It brings all those concepts, it brings them to life,” said John Musso, dean of students and engineering instructor at the School of Engineering and Biomedical Science at Pueblo County High School.

More girls are getting interested in engineering careers.

“It was really hard for me because I stepped out of my comfort zone. When I was in sixth grade, out of 20 boys, I was the only girl,” said Aryanna Gallegos, an 8th grader participating in the competition.

District event organizers said this demonstrates the integration of science and application of math to something tangible.

“Things that, even the middle school kids that are here today, what they’ve done versus even two to three years ago is phenomenal. It really pushes us at the high school end. The bar is raised so early and so high that it’s made our program so much better,” Musso said.

Nearly 1,600 kids will compete at the state competition in Denver later this month.
