Ice sculptures fire up Broncos fans

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Super Bowl Sunday is now just two days away and the Promenade Shops at Briargate are showing their Broncos pride. This afternoon, they brought in two artists that sculpted some cool creations.

The shops are now home to the largest ice sculpture in Southern Colorado. The piece is nearly 2 tons of solid ice, and it’s firing fans up for the big game.

Artists Jess Parrish and Eric Knoll have been carving ice sculptures for nearly a decade, and judging by their work, it’s easy to tell.

“It lets me be artistic and creative on a daily basis, and you know I love to make people happy,” Parrish said. “There’s a wow factor just because people often times haven’t seen it before, so it’s fun. It creates a nice energy, and I like to be a part of that.”

The two call themselves the Cool Hand Ice Carving team, and they’re creating three pieces for football fans. They made a Broncos bench, a Super Bowl logo and a pony for the younger crowd.

“Our guests can come and get their picture taken with the logo. They can sit on the bench. We’re going to illuminate it with some led lights,” Parrish said.

For many of the spectators, it’s the first time they’ve been this close or even seen an ice sculpture.

“It’s beautiful. We love it,” Matt Ross said.

Even though these works come together pretty quickly, a lot of work goes into them.

“You know you got to take it from a square object, and then you have to take it out and then you got to shape it and finally put detail on it,” Knoll said.

Even after all that work, unfortunately these fan favorites won’t last long.

“This weather is favorable for ice sculptures and maintaining their condition, so I would say they’re probably going to last through the Super Bowl. They’ll last until the Broncos win,” Knoll said.

If you do take some photos with the sculptures before they’re gone, be sure to put them on social media and use the hashtag #UnitedinOrange. The Briargate shops said you could win a gift card.
