Man cited for carrying concealed machete while wearing ghillie suit

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A man was cited Tuesday morning for carrying a concealed machete while wearing a ghillie suit.

Police said an officer was patrolling the area of Austin Bluffs Parkway and Barnes Road around 8 a.m. when he saw a man wearing a ghillie suit and acting suspicious in the parking lot of Family Dollar. A ghillie suit is a type of camouflage made of loose scraps of fabric and designed to resemble heavy foliage.

The officer contacted the man, 23-year-old Justin Smith, and learned he was concealing a machete with an 18-inch blade on his side. Smith told police that he had slept outside, and when he does that, he wears the ghillie suit.

Smith was served a summons for unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon.
