Coming together to fight cancer

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo — Kids at The Classical Academy did big things as they raised as much money as possible for the American Cancer Society. Their week long event, TCA vs. Cancer, wrapped up Friday.

There were a lot of kids supporting this campaign at the ‘pink out’ basketball games. Student organizers said this campaign is doing something TCA has never done before.

“We’ve never united all seven campuses in the same project and so we wanted to find a way to unite all seven campuses and 3,700 students behind a project bigger than themselves,” said Zayna Pieper, student organizer.

But why pick cancer?

“Cancer is a very deadly disease that affects about 14.5 million people in the United States right now,” said Pieper.

“It’s something a lot of people can relate to. It’s something very, very close to home,” said Moriah Swank student organizer.

Seeing their classmates respond to the campaign was inspiring.

“I have loved every day I come in to school and there is a huge mound of people over by the penny wars jars and they’re throwing in pennies and silver coins and it’s just incredible to see,” said Swank.

They’ve raised over $6,000 through the penny war with more set to come in from the silent auction. One cancer survivor said it gives strength to those fighting.

“It means hope for people who wonder if that cancer will rear its head again and whether they’ll have to reengage in those treatments, so it gives them something to look forward to each day when they see kids that haven’t experienced that part of life, but have instilled in them the value of giving back to someone,” said Brandon Helm.

Students have one big message to wrap up the campaign.

“You can be a super hero, because super hero’s make a difference,” said Swank.

They said all of their classmates are now heroes for donating so much to cancer research and they said they didn’t even have a goal, so for them to raise over $6,000 was a really big surprise for them.
