Does your job make the top 10 list for most stressful?

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Many of us consider our jobs to be pretty stressful, and all of them are, to an extent. That’s why they call it work, right?

Some professions have to deal with a lot more stress than others. CBS News recently came out with a list of 10 of the most stressful jobs.

The first 5 are taxi driver, newspaper reporter, broadcasters, senior corporate executives, and public relations executives. Coming in at number 5 is event coordinators. It’s a profession you maybe wouldn’t think of at first, but considering their tight deadlines and having to deal with bridezillas, you can probably understand why.

In 4th place on the top 10 list is police officers.

Not surprising right?

They’re often put into intense situations like stand-offs with dangerous criminals, and it isn’t uncommon for officers to get shot at.

“I think the biggest thing that we deal with that can be considered stressful is the unknown. You never know what that next call for service could be,” Lt. Catherine Buckley with the Colorado Springs Police Department said.

In the number three spot is a pilot. The men and women who fly several times a day and each time are responsible for the safety of hundreds of lives, thousands of feet in the air.

Coming in at number two is firefighters. Every day, they’re one of the first people to come to the scene of tragic accidents and house fires, and they risk their lives trying to save others. Those stressful moments don’t end once they get back to the station.

“Our exposure to trauma that we witness when we’re on scene when we get called out, that’s the obvious stress. The less obvious stress is the hyper-vigilant state that we’re in when we arrive at work. From the time we set foot in the door, we’re waiting for something to happen,” said Colorado Springs Fire Department Battalion Chief Jayme McConnellogue.

The number one most stressful job on the top 10 list is enlisted military personnel. As if training for combat isn’t grueling enough, once they’re deployed, they could be laying their lives on the line for their country. The toll it takes on them mentally is an added stress they deal with once they’re home.

So why do these men and women suit up for these stressful jobs every day? A few of the people we spoke to say it’s just in their blood.

“It definitely takes a certain type of person,” Lt. Buckley said.

“I think it’s in us. I think it’s what we’re looking for. We’re looking to serve,” Battalion Chief McConnellogue said.

“I think that what makes it worth it is getting to serve the community. Getting to go out there and help people work through their problems,” Lt. Buckley said.

Even though they are number one on the list, military personnel actually make the least amount of money out of the top five most stressful jobs.
