COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — With nearly 3,000 acres of land, 61 campsites and more than 22 miles of hiking trails, Cheyenne Mountain State Park has a lot to offer.

“That is open to hiking, mountain biking, also a few miles worth of equestrian trails,” said Mitchell Martin, park manager of Cheyenne Mountain State Park.

It’s the only state park in El Paso County, and brings in 170,000 visitors a year.

“Our state park here is just one of the gems in Colorado and we want to open it up to the public and make them aware of what we have to offer,” said Pat Cooper, president of Friends of Cheyenne Mountain State Park.

To help with park upkeep and its programs, Friends Of Cheyenne Mountain State Park organizes fundraisers to help supplement funds the park doesn’t have.

Funding goes to park activities like teaching archery, environmental education, family mystery hikes and more.

“We have this incredible pool of volunteers that we can offer a very diverse variety of programs,” Cooper said.

The nonprofit works to support and advocate for the park, including purchasing supplies.

“The volunteer crew that comes out and helps, over 300 volunteers logging in 11,000 hours this year, is a huge benefit as far as what we’re able to provide to the public and to our visitors.”

One goal for the nonprofit is to build a trail to the very top of the mountain within the next couple of years.

“Our focus is to get people in the outdoors and to enjoy the beautiful parks of El Paso County,” Cooper said.
