The incident happened just before 10 p.m. Friday when the Cherokee came speeding off Highway 70 into the parking lot of the Handi Mart in Clayton, police said.

The SUV jumped the cement blocks at the edge of the building and slammed into the front of the convenience store. The force from the crash pushed the front door of the Handi Mart wide open and the SUV was lifted onto two side wheels upon impact.

The driver immediately backed up and sped away from the scene through the parking lot of the adjacent McCall’s restaurant, Clayton police said.

The SUV knocked out the front wall and window of the business and destroyed items inside on the shelf across from the front wall, according to images from Clayton Police.

“While officers searched the nearby area for the signs of the damaged vehicle, they still cannot locate the suspect or his SUV,” said Stacy Beard, spokeswoman for Clayton.

Video footage of the incident did not show the license plate on the Cherokee.
