Calhan woman killed in El Paso County crash

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A Calhan woman was killed in a rollover crash east of Colorado Springs Wednesday afternoon.

The Colorado State Patrol said the crash happened around 2:15 p.m. on Log Road near JD Johnson Road. That’s about five miles northwest of Ellicott. A Honda Passport SUV was headed south when the driver lost control. The SUV went off the eastern edge of the road and rolled.

The driver, 36-year-old Mary Layman of Calhan, was ejected from the SUV. She died on the scene. Troopers said she was not wearing her seatbelt.

The passenger, 18-year-old Cody Ritenour, was also not wearing his seatbelt, but was not ejected. He sustained minor injuries.

Troopers said alcohol and drug use are not considered factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
