COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A man threw away his gun after security guards caught him carrying it on school property Tuesday night, according to police.

Police said the incident happened around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 1800-block of Jet Wing Drive. Police did not say specifically where the incident occurred, but maps show the only school in that block is Everest College.

Officers were dispatched to the school to investigate a report of a man with a gun. A security guard gave them a suspect description, and as officers arrived, they found a man matching that description in front of the school. Police detained the man, but he did not have a gun.

Officers searched the area and found an unloaded .357 revolver in a trash can in front of the school doors. Witnesses told police they had seen the suspect carrying the gun.

The man, 18-year-old Samuel Jackson, was arrested on charges of possessing a weapon on school property, which is a class six felony. He’s also facing other charges.
