‘Skate in the Park’ opens at Acacia Park

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.– Skate in the Park kicked off today and several people are lacing up to hit the rink at Acacia Park.

It’s the Downtown Partnership’s 3rd year putting the rink up, and they said it’s the only outdoor rink in the region.

“It appeals to all ages,” CEO of the Downtown Partnership Susan Edmondson said. “We see the tiny, tiny tinies, date night, older folks. It’s a really great family activity, and then you can go out and have hot coco at a local shop or restaurant. It’s a real community, family atmosphere here.”

Edmondson said this is her favorite project because it’s not only good for downtown Colorado Springs, but it also brings our community together. Even two high school hockey teams were out to help people learn to skate.

“We do this every year as a team and we like to do it. It just shows who we really are,” Jack Gault, a hockey player for Doherty High School, said.

“It’s just nice to help out the community anyway possible and since we both love hockey, helping out with anybody that cant skate is just a great way for us,” Noah Johnston said.

While this rink is only in its third year, organizers say they plan to bring it back for years to come.

“The rink is getting bigger, we’re expanding the number of days. So we’ve been in Acacia park every year and people just love the opportunity to come downtown and skate,” Edmondson said.

Skate in the Park will be open every day from tonight until Jan. 18. Admission is $10 and that includes rental skates, but it’s free for anyone 4 and under.

Edmondson said the money is used to keep bringing the rink back every year.
