COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — It’s the holiday season yet again and it marks a time for the gift of giving.

“There are a lot of families in need in our community that you won’t know are in need,” said Andy Barton, CEO of Catholic Charities of Central Colorado.

According to Care and Share Food Bank officials, 15 percent of people in Southern Colorado don’t have enough food at their home.

“Many of them are working, but they’ve had some incident in their life, a car repair, medical bills, or they just don’t make enough to make ends meet and they have to make difficult choices in their lives,” said Lynne Telford, president and CEO of Care and Share Food Bank of Southern Colorado.

Choices like paying the rent or putting food on the table. It’s why the food bank is partnering with several organizations for their annual community turkey drive.

Their partners include the Springs Rescue Mission, Catholic Charities, Panera Bread, the Sky Sox and Security Service. Their goal is to collect 10,000 turkeys.

“It’s two-fold for us, it’s providing that meal, which is important, but it is also making sure that we’re giving families and individuals the opportunity to be a part of a community that’s coming together and it’s also bringing the community and giving them the opportunity to support those who are in need,” Barton said.

Now, the need for turkeys is even bigger.

“The bird flu made it hard to stretch our budget to buy turkeys, as many turkeys as we have in years past. So, we’re really relying on the community to come together once again and help us feed the people of Southern Colorado,” Telford said.

Turkeys need to be collected by Nov. 20. You can drop those or other donations off at Wal-Mart and at any of the food bank’s partners’ locations.
