Elderly woman sends dog for help, rescued hours later

EAST AURORA, N.Y. (WIVB) — A true tale of man (or woman’s) best friend.

An 82-year-old East Aurora woman was taking her dog for a walk on trails in the woods off of Sweet Road in the town of Aurora on Thursday afternoon.

At 6:15 p.m., just over two hours after her walk began, the woman had not yet returned home. Her family had become concerned and began to look for her, according to East Aurora Police.

Shortly after this, the woman’s dog had returned home, but without her.

At this point, East Aurora Police and Fire, along with two other local fire companies, began a search in the area where the woman had been walking. Police said the area was “heavily wooded, with steep hills and several creeks with high, fast water due to heavy rains.”

The elderly woman was eventually found between Hubbard Road and Olean Road around 9:30 p.m. She was very wet and cold, but uninjured according to police, who also said she refused to go to the hospital.

A police report said she took her walk “a little farther than normal when she became lost in the dark”.

During this time, the woman took shelter under trees to stay out of the rain. While she waited, police said she sent the dog to go home so that family members would know she was missing.

The dog did just that, leading to the woman’s rescue.

News 4 has learned the woman and the dog both only understand one language — Russian.
