COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Heavy rains have forced an early closure of Black Forest Road at Kettle Creek.

County officials planned to close the road for several months starting November 1. Two stormwater culverts over the creek were heavily damaged during summer flooding, and the erosion is threatening the road itself.

County officials said Thursday that they were hoping to keep the road open until November 1 so they could install detour signs, but erosion caused by the recent rains has forced them to close it immediately.

The closure is about a half mile north of the intersection of Black Forest Road and Shoup Road. About 5,000 people use that portion of the road each day.

Drivers will be rerouted over a three-mile detour using Swan, Herring, and Shoup roads.
