La Junta man killed, teen injured in collision with deer

OTERO COUNTY, Colo. — A La Junta man was killed and his passenger was seriously injured when his car collided with a deer Wednesday evening.

The Colorado State Patrol said the crash happened around 6:30 p.m. on Highway 10 near mile marker 70 in Otero County. George Nelson, 44, of La Junta was driving a 1996 Volvo Sedan when it collided with a deer. The car went off the side of the road, hit a utility pole, and rolled, partially ejecting Nelson.

Nelson died on the scene.

The Volvo’s passenger, a 14-year-old boy from La Junta, was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Troopers said alcohol and drugs are not considered factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
