ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) –  Police say a 4-year-old girl was shot and killed during a road rage incident on I-40 on Tuesday afternoon.

A person of interest in the shooting has been taken into custody, according to police. No details about the person were immediately available.

The Albuquerque Police Department said the incident happened after Alan Garcia picked up his children–his 4-year-old daughter and his 7-year-old son–from school.

Police Chief Gorden Eden said at some point, a road rage incident occurred and shots were fired.

Officers said a Bernalillo County Sheriff’s deputy was first on scene. The deputy spotted a disabled vehicle and stopped to help. There, a frantic father said his 4-year-old daughter was shot during a road rage incident. In addition to the deputy who stopped, two nurses also stopped to render aid.

Police say 4-year-old Lilly Garcia was rushed to UNM Hospital, but she died from her injuries.

“I’ve seen tragic loss of children in car crashes,” said Eden. “To me, this is one of the crimes which is unexplainable.”

So far, no one has explained how this all started. Detectives said the suspect likely fired off shots while driving.

“This is a complete disrespect of human life,” said Eden.

The death of Lilly Garcia has impacted the entire community. The family started a GoFundMe account Wednesday morning. In just hours, it has raised tens of thousands of dollars.

Earlier, KRQE News 13 received a call from local florist Ana Johanson, who wants to donate her services to the family for the girl’s funeral.

Lilly’s death has also affected the medical team who tried desperately to save her life. Now, the University Of New Mexico School Of Medicine wants to help her family as well. They’re holding a Halloween dance this Saturday and organizers say all the money will go back to the family.

A car club that is organizing a car show also wants to raise money for her.

If you wish to donate, be aware that there are a few fake GoFundMe accounts that have been created using this tragedy. To donate, here is a link to the GoFundMe account created by Lilly’s family.
