COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A man sustained non-life-threatening injuries when his gun went off as he was exiting his vehicle after a crash Monday afternoon.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened around 12:45 p.m. on Goldfield Drive, which is in Security-Widefield. An OnStar alert notified deputies of the crash.

When deputies arrived, they found the driver had been shot. Their investigation revealed the man was under the influence of prescription drugs, causing him to crash his vehicle. He had a gun tucked into his shorts, and it accidentally went off as he got out of the vehicle after the crash. The bullet hit him in the leg.

The vehicle’s passenger was not injured.

The man was served and released on charges of DUI, prohibited use of a weapon, and false reporting.
