MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. — The 21st annual Emma Crawford Coffin Races are this Saturday, October 24, in downtown Manitou Springs.

Each year, more than 10,000 people line the streets for the fun and festive event. Teams of five–one Emma and four runners–push their coffins 195 feet to the finish line. Prizes are awarded to the fastest runners, as well as the Best Emma, Best Entourage, and Best Coffin. The event starts off at noon with a parade, followed by the races around 12:30.

Manitou Springs police said road closures will begin around 10 a.m., and roads will start to reopen around 3 p.m. The following detours will be in place:

  • Westbound traffic on Manitou Avenue will be diverted at Old Mans Trail. Vehicles will detour west onto El Paso Boulevard, then west onto Lovers Lane. Traffic will then flow from Lovers Lane to Canon Avenue and onto Park Avenue, then back out onto Manitou Ave (westbound only) in the 1100-block.
  • Eastbound traffic on Manitou Avenue will be diverted at Ruxton Avenue. From Ruxton Avenue, traffic will flow east onto Osage Avenue, south onto Navajo Avenue, east onto Duclo Avenue, north onto Pawnee Avenue, east onto High Street, north onto Deer Path, east onto High Road, north onto South Path, then east back onto Manitou Avenue.
  • Vehicles traveling north on Ruxton Avenue will be diverted westbound onto Manitou Avenue at the roundabout.
  • The race course on Manitou Avenue will remain closed throughout the event.

No parking will be allowed on Manitou Avenue between Old Mans Trail and the Ruxton Avenue roundabout during the event. Illegally parked vehicles will be towed.

Due to the limited parking in Manitou, race organizers are urging spectators to use parking outside of the city. A free shuttle is available from lots at Rock Ledge Ranch, Fields Park, and Manitou Springs High School. The shuttle will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. More information
