Lunar eclipse, supermoon visible in southern Colorado Sunday

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Southern Colorado and much of the world will see skies graced by a bright, big moon that will be encapsulated in a total lunar eclipse late Sunday evening, according to NASA.

The combination of a supermoon and a lunar eclipse hasn’t happened since 1982. It won’t happen again until 2033.

The supermoon, which comes around once every year, will appear 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter in the sky that evening before it is engulfed by an eclipse for more than an hour.

In southern Colorado, the moon will rise and the sun will set between 6:45 and 7 p.m. The partial eclipse will begin around 7:10 p.m., and the total eclipse will be from 8:10 to 9:25 p.m. The moon will exit the Earth’s shadow from 9:25 to 10:25 p.m.

You don’t need to go anywhere special to see this event. Just go to a place where you can see the moon, and look up. However, two local groups are hosting special events to view the moon. Both are free and open to the public.

The Colorado Springs Astronomical Society is hosting a free viewing event at Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. The program is scheduled for 7-9:30 p.m. Telescopes and binoculars will be available for a closer view of the moon.

The Southern Colorado Astronomical Society is hosting a free viewing party at the CSU-Pueblo Observatory/Raptor Center parking lot. The event starts at 6 p.m. Telescopes and binoculars will be available for a closer view of the moon.

As of Friday morning, FOX21 meteorologists are predicting clear skies Sunday night. Get the latest forecast here.
