COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is unveiling its newly-renovated tapir exhibit.

The zoo’s female mountain tapir, Carlotta, took her first steps into the new exhibit Friday morning. Her mate, Cofan, will join her Saturday morning.

The two tapirs have been living in an off-exhibit area since 2012, due to the construction of Encounter Africa.

The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is one of only two zoos in the United States with mountain tapirs. The other is the Los Angeles Zoo.

Mountain tapirs are the most critically endangered species of tapir. Experts estimate there are fewer than 3,000 left in the wild.
