Fun fried food at the Colorado State Fair

PUEBLO, Colo. — The Colorado State Fair is in full swing, and there are more than 40 food vendors at the fair.

Many people say when you come to the fair, you should check your diet at the gates and just enjoy all the food they have to offer–like sizzling hot deep fried Pueblo Chiles.

“Seven minutes to 10 just depending on the size of them. The little skinny ones are a little faster. The fatter ones are a little longer,” Tom Giodone, owner of Chiles en Fuego Wagon, said.

And once they are done cooking, they’re served in a basket.

“Its dealer’s choice. It could be hot or it could be mild,” Giodone said.

Chiles en Fuego also serves some other local favorites.

“The Green Chile Slopper is very popular. We have been serving them since 1965 at our restaurant,” Giodone said.

And if you’re not up for the spicy food, they have sweet and savory snacks too.

“Mexican funnel cake. It’s churro batter that’s made into a funnel cake. You will fry it just like you would a funnel cake. Then we sprinkle cinnamon sugar and we cover it with whip cream and strawberries,” cashier Zach Stoever said.

Depending on who you talk to, they have their own favorite fair food.

“Cheese fries, because I like cheese,” one fairgoer said.

“Anything fried, corn dogs,” another woman said.

The state fair also features a Jumbo Mexican funnel cake challenge. You have to eat a huge funnel cake in 30 minutes. If you succeed, you get your money back.

Two men attempted this challenge on Wednesday night, but were unable to complete it. A few people have finished it in California, but no one has finished it in Colorado.

The fair ends on September 7, so there is still plenty of time to check out all the food or attempt the Jumbo Mexican Funnel Cake Challenge.
