COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Hikers along Monument Creek were treated to quite the surprise Wednesday afternoon: a moose on the loose.

The young cow moose was spotted early in the afternoon near Monument Valley Park. Parks and Wildlife officials temporarily shut down the trail to make sure people were giving her plenty of room while she cooled off in the creek.

The trail has since reopened, but Parks and Wildlife officials are staying close by, keeping an eye on her in hopes she’ll move on.

“If she’s in an area where people are leaving her alone and she’s not bothering anybody, we’ll just leave her be,” Colorado Parks and Wildlife Area Wildlife Manager Frank McGee said. “If people are continuing to get close to her and push her around or she starts acting aggressively, we’ll probably have to move her.”

CWP said while moose may appear calm and harmless, they can become aggressive very quickly, especially if there are dogs around. They said the best thing to do if you see a moose is give it plenty of space.
