PUEBLO, Colo. — An auto theft suspect dropped an inert grenade while running from officers Thursday morning, according to police.

Police said around 6 a.m., they received a report of someone breaking into a vehicle in the 2400-block of Alma Avenue. When they arrived, officers saw a man running from the scene and into an apartment complex. Police chased him, and during the pursuit, the suspect dropped what appeared to be a hand grenade.

Police found the suspect, 24-year-old Jose Raul Mena, hiding in the apartment complex. He was arrested and charged with first-degree criminal trespass, attempted auto theft, resisting arrest, and violation of a protection order.

The Pueblo Metro Bomb Squad was called out to deal with the grenade. They inspected it and determined it was inert. They said it was an altered device with no explosive charge.
