COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Colorado Department of Transportation finished installing girders over southbound Interstate 25 Sunday night at the Fillmore Street Interchange. Since southbound is complete, only northbound I-25 will be closed Monday night to complete girder installation.

Beginning at 9 p.m., northbound I-25 will be closed to traffic and will remain closed until about 5 a.m. Tuesday. While the highway is closed, traffic will detour via the exit and entrance ramps to allow crews to place the remaining two girders over the highway as part of the interchange reconstruction project. Closing the highway is necessary to maintain safety for the traveling public.

ADDITIONAL TRAFFIC DETOURS:

  • Southbound I-25 – can access westbound Fillmore. For eastbound Fillmore, drivers should exit at Garden of the Gods Road or Fontanero Street.
  • Northbound I-25 – can access eastbound Fillmore. For westbound Fillmore, drivers should exit at Garden of the Gods
  • Eastbound Fillmore – can access southbound I-25. For northbound I-25, drivers should take southbound I-25 to Fontanero and turnaround to access northbound I-25.
  • Westbound Fillmore – can access northbound I-25. For southbound I-25, drivers should go north on I-25 to Garden of the Gods and turnaround to access southbound I-25.

I-25 will reopen to traffic by 5 a.m. on Friday, July 10, and Monday, July 13.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is replacing the current diamond interchange with a Diverging Diamond Interchange where both directions of traffic on Fillmore will cross on the opposite side of the bridge. It will also increase the vehicle capacity of the overpass by removing the left turn signal phase with a free-flow left turn movement.

Construction is scheduled for completion in summer 2016.
