Starbucks continues military initiative to hire 10,000 veterans and military spouses by 2018

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A Colorado Springs Starbucks was chosen as the next Military Family Store.

It’s part of their military initiative to hire 10,000 veterans and military spouses by 2018.

Since beginning the military initiative in 2013, Starbucks has hired more than 3,700 veterans and military spouses.

That number is expected to grow even more, with further additions of Starbucks Military Family Stores, like the one near Fort Carson.

“We consistently, as military family members, move from one place to the next and are always looking to start over a career,” Jennifer Roxburg, a store manager at Starbucks Cheyenne Meadows, said.

With an 18 percent military demographic in Colorado Springs, Starbucks officials said it’s essential for management to recognize military experience and leadership, which can help make the transition from military to civilian life smoother.

“What I’d like to do, is to be able to take my military experience and transfer it into a company like Starbucks who wants to take care of their employees and take care of their people,” said Cpt. Justin Kelly.

It’s something Kelly has been thinking about as he prepares to medically retire from the Army.

“Most of my job was really taking care of people and taking care of soldiers’ families. And that’s what I really enjoyed about it,” Kelly said.

But it’s also a big help to military spouses, which can be a full-time job in itself.

“The competitive level of getting a job in this area is pretty intense. So, knowing that more and more organizations are out there offering more positions makes it a lot easier for her to get employed and take care of our family better,” said SSGT. Jon Schaerfl.

“I’ve seen a lot of spouses, they bounce all over the place and they go to a hiring manager and here’s my resume and the hiring manager says, ‘Well you haven’t been employed.’ or, ‘Why have you moved so often?'” Kelly said.

Starbucks carries on their job transfers even overseas, ensuring military spouses retain their employment.

The Starbucks on Cheyenne Meadows near Fort Carson currently employs six military spouses.

Officials said their goal is to have a total of 12 military family stores across America this year.
