ADX inmate sentenced to life for murdering fellow inmate

DENVER — An inmate at ADX in Florence has been sentenced to life in prison for killing a fellow inmate.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Denver said Silvestre Rivera, 57, was sentenced Friday for the murder of Manuel Torrez. Rivera was convicted of first-degree murder in a two-week trial that concluded April 21.

The office said Torrez was killed April 21, 2005 while exercising in the recreation area that is part of the ADX’s general population unit.

Testimony at the trial indicated Rivera, co-defendant Richard Santiago, and Torrez were all part of the Mexican Mafia. Torrez and Santiago arrived at ADX in 2000. Shortly after Rivera’s arrival, Torrez was killed.

Santiago, 55, is still awaiting trial.
