Shoplifting suspect climbs into Safeway ceiling in attempt to evade police

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A woman accused of shoplifting from a Safeway store climbed into the ceiling in an attempt to evade arrest Monday night, according to police.

Police said the incident happened around 11:15 p.m. at the grocery store on Murray Boulevard in southeastern Colorado Springs. Officers arrived and learned the suspect, Catherine Rowland, had climbed up into the ceiling to avoid capture. After a lengthy search, police found Rowland wedged between two walls in the ceiling. She was treated for abrasions and contusions she sustained while navigating the ceiling barefoot.

Police said Rowland caused about $10,000 worth of damage to the store. She is charged with unlawful use of a financial transaction device and felony criminal mischief.
