Farmers markets open up all over the Pikes Peak Region

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Farmers markets are opening up across southern Colorado. Wednesday, June 10 was the opening day of the Colorado Farm and Art Market at the Ivywild School.

Colorado Springs resident Debie Bennett listed some of her farmers market finds.

“Lemon white chocolate bread, we got some fresh beets, very small and rainbow colored, some coffee, squash plant and a young cucumber plant because ours were destroyed in the hail,” she said.

“We’ve got a bunch of different sourdoughs,” Shawn Saunders, owner of The Sourdough Boulangerie, said. “Everything is organic. Everything is locally sourced from Colorado.”

And you can expect to see some new farmers this season.

“We are very excited to have the Arkansas Valley Organic Growers. They’re going to be, they’re a co-op of family farms down by Pueblo,” Colorado Farm and Art Market Marketing Director Bonnie Simon said. “There’s nine of them and they’re going to be here. They actually are here. They’re at the other end of the farmers market with all different kinds of produce from Colorado.”

But what is so important about shopping local?

“It’s important to have fresh food. It certainly lessens the carbon footprint when you buy local,” said Bennett.

“It really helps the economy, that’s number one. It helps the small guys.” Saunders said. “The money stays in the community rather than getting shipped out to Walmart or wherever.”
