Community gathers at Evergreen Cemetery for Memorial Day

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Evergreen Cemetery celebrates Memorial Day every year. It’s a time for the community to come together to honor their nation’s fallen heroes. The ones who have given their lives for their country.

Music played as the public followed the 10th U.S. Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers through the cemetery.

“It’s about recognizing the people who have made our lives and our living easier here in the USA and did a lot of tremendous work,” said George Payton Jr., RSM, 10th U.S. Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers.

Their procession ended at George Mason’s grave, a Buffalo Solider who fought in the Spanish American War.

“We come together on a good day, for a very good cause, and I wish it could carry on every day of our lives,” said Payton.

On a day that hits home for many, Mason was one of thousands honored this Memorial Day. Some who lost their lives years ago and others who passed just recently.

“We’ve had people who have lost their loved ones in the current war, and so this day has a lot of meaning and emotion for them,” said Dianne Hartshorn, director, Evergreen Cemetery.
