Red Mountain Pass closed Wednesday for vehicle recovery

OURAY COUNTY, Colo. — U.S. 550 was closed at Red Mountain Pass starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday as crews retrieved a vehicle.

The closure started at mile marker 89 on the north side and mile marker 87 on the south side. The vehicle being retrieved was at mile marker 88.6.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, the vehicle, a 2000 Mazda pickup, fell off the mountainside around 12:30 p.m. Friday. It was parked, unattended, on the west shoulder of the highway when it began to roll. It went about 138 feet, then went off the mountainside. It rolled over several times and stopped about 250 feet below the roadway.

The highway reopened just before 3 p.m.
