COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — An election to choose the next mayor of Colorado Springs is underway.

Former Attorney General John Suthers and former Colorado Springs Mayor Mary Lou Makepeace are squaring off in a runoff election. Suthers received 46.37 percent of the vote in the April 7 municipal election. Makepeace came in second, with 23.56 percent of the vote. The city charter dictates that if no candidate receives a majority of the vote in the general election, a runoff between the top two candidates will be held.

The runoff is a mail-ballot only election. If you do not receive a ballot by May 4, and believe you are a registered active voter within Colorado Springs city limits, you’re asked to call the city clerk’s office at 719-385-5901, option 4.

Ballots may be dropped off at specified locations anytime between now and 7 p.m. on Election Night, which is Tuesday, May 19. If you choose to mail your ballot, it must be received by the city clerk’s office–not just postmarked–by 7 p.m. on election night.
