COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A man robbed a U.S. Bank inside a Safeway store Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

Police said the robbery happened around 3:30 p.m. at the store at 2890 North Powers Boulevard. A man went into the store, walked up to the bank counter, and “made a statement about a bomb and money,” according to police. He was given the money and ran from the scene.

Detectives determined the suspect had gone into a nearby business to wait for a ride. He then left the shopping center, made some purchases at another business in the area, and was dropped off several miles away, according to police.

Police identified the suspect as Juan Carlos Vergara, 25, of Utah, and obtained a warrant for his arrest. The next morning, investigators learned Vergara had likely already left the state. Police told the Salt Lake City Police Department that the suspect might be in their jurisdiction. Salt Lake City police quickly found Vergara in a hotel and arrested him on the robbery warrant.

Vergara is in custody in Salt Lake City, awaiting extradition back to Colorado Springs.
