COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Earth day is Wednesday but the Garden of the Gods Visitor & Nature Center celebrates early with its 18th annual Earth Day event.

Garden of the Gods Program Coordinator of Parks, Recreation &Cultural Service, Bret Tennis said, “This is an annual event for us. This is our 18th annual event and we host it here at The Visitor and Nature Center which is right across the street from the main entrance to the Garden of the Gods Park.”

Even though Earth Day is not actually until next week, many kids as well as adults got the party started early.

“We like to celebrate it on Saturday and help educate people about the environment and really just bring awareness to Earth Day,” said Tennis.

And according to Alexis Phillips, her favorite part of the day was, “Seeing all the animals.”

In order to have all of the animals available, Tennis said, “We partnered with a lot of different people so the zoo brings some animals here and they do a presentation. We’ve got live birds of prey throughout the day from people like the Air Force Academy or Nature’s Educators.”

And if you take the short shuttle ride next door you can see some more feathery and furry friends.

“We partnered with Rock Ledge Ranch Living History Site, they’re right across the street from us and they have a full day of activities and events,” Tennis said.

But Earth Day is not just about fun and games.

“It’s important to realize we’re part of nature.” Tennis added, “We’re connected to it, you know we’re all part of this big picture that makes up nature.”
