Colorado teacher shares heartbreaking notes, sparks social media movement

DENVER, Colo. – A Colorado teacher has sparked an Internet movement after she assigned her students a writing assignment.

The assignment, “I Wish My Teacher Knew,” was assigned to third grade students at Doull Elementary School in Denver.

“As a new teacher, I struggled to understand the reality of my students’ lives and how to best support them. I just felt like there was something I didn’t know about my students,” Kyle Schwartz told ABC News.

Schwartz has been teaching for approximately three years, according to ABC News.

After giving it some thought, Schwartz realized that she wanted to learn more about her students.

For the assignment, Schwartz asked her students to write down something they would like her to know about them.

Schwartz wasn’t prepared for what she learned.

After reading through students’ responses, Schwartz knew she had to share them with the world.

Some of the notes were heartbreaking to read, but Schwartz says she’s glad she learned more about her students.

Several of the notes were shared by Schwartz on Twitter with the hashtag #IWishMyTeacherKnew, encouraging other instructors to try the same lesson.

“In the end, all teachers want to support their students, and #IWishMyTeacherKnew is a simple and powerful way to do that,” Schwartz told ABC News.
