SECURITY-WIDEFIELD, Colo. — A theft suspect’s dad helped deputies catch his son Saturday.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect stole a wallet, two social security cards, and a Ruger 10/22 in the 4600-block of Manzana Drive between Thursday night and Friday morning. The sheriff’s office provided a surveillance image of the suspect to local media.

Then, Saturday, the victim got a call from an unknown man who returned most of his stolen property, including the wallet, the social security cards, and the rifle. The victim called deputies, who identified the caller and arranged a meeting with him. When deputies asked how he came to be in possession of the stolen property, then man said, “my son stole it and I wanted to do the right thing and return it.”

Deputies then questioned the suspect, who, they said, confessed to stealing the items and using the stolen credit card.

The suspect, 21-year-old Jacob Montoya, was jailed on charges of identity theft, unauthorized use of a financial transaction, first-degree criminal trespass, false information to a pawn broker, and theft.
