Cañon City police taking applications for citizen’s academy

CAÑON CITY, Colo. — The Cañon City Police Department Citizen’s Police Academy is an informative program that provides insight to the public about police department responsibilities and internal operations. The academy is designed to open channels of communication between citizens of Cañon City and their police officers and provide a better understanding of police work, the role of police in society, and the criminal justice system. The academy’s objective is not to make officers out of citizens but rather to enlighten citizens with accurate knowledge of the department’s responsibilities and functions.

The 2015 Citizens Police Academy is an 8-week program, held on Thursday evenings, from 6pm – 9pm, beginning on May 7th and ending on June 25th. The first class will be held at 161 Justice Center Road in the Municipal Courtroom and will include a tour of the Police Department. Subsequent classes will be held at the Canon City Police Annex. Cañon City residents completing the academy will have opportunities for a police ride-along, participation in a graduation ceremony, and a class picture photograph.

In order to sign up for the class, you must complete an application form and a background check will be completed prior to your acceptance into the class. Questions about the academy or requests for application forms should be directed to Crime Prevention Coordinator Jen O’Connor at or by phone at 719-276-5600 x3917. Space is limited and completed forms must be received by Friday, April 29th in order to allow time for notification.
