Low church attendance rates in Colorado

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A recent Gallup poll found Colorado had one of the lowest weekly church attendance rates in the nation.

“Very conservative, a great place to raise your family,” said Pinio Garcia, a resident of Colorado Springs.

But locally, residents say it’s much different.

“I’ve traveled all over from Florida to Oregon, and I have to say Colorado Springs is probably the heaviest Christian-based community that I’ve ever been a part of,” said Adam Tabor, who has been living in Colorado Springs for a year.

Dr. Jared Pingleton with Focus on the Family agrees.

“We have well over 100 ministries headquartered in Colorado Springs,” Pingleton said.

Pingleton said the poll results are what he would expect, but he believes churches have been evolving with time to better serve the needs of the community.

“Many more progressive churches, for example, are expanding their outreach to the poor, they’re reaching the needs of single adults, they’re offering groups for divorce recovery, for survivors of childhood trauma, they’re reaching out more in terms of counseling centers and meeting human need in a very real and practical basis,” Pingleton said.
