Colorado bill addresses campus sex assaults

The Colorado House has given preliminary approval to a bill that would require colleges and universities to designate a nearby medical facility for students who need sexual assault exams.

The bill was prompted by reports that only one Colorado campus has the so-called “rape kits,” or SANE exams. The exam kits aren’t available at the University of Colorado or at Colorado State University.

The bill would require schools to have a unified policy for where to send students who report sex assaults. The schools would have to train more staff members in the policy, including dorm resident assistants.

The measure doesn’t require the forensic exams to be available on each campus. One more formal vote is required before the bill heads to the Senate.
