Man arrested on DUI charges after hitting police cruiser

A man was arrested on suspicion of DUI after hitting a police cruiser in northeastern Colorado Springs early Saturday morning.

Police said an officer was conducting a traffic stop at the intersection of Union Boulevard and Damon Drive around 2:30 a.m. Saturday when the crash occurred. The officer was operating a fully marked police cruiser, and the emergency lights were activated during the traffic stop, according to police.

As the officer was issuing a summons to the driver of the stopped vehicle, a 2002 Ford van traveling southbound on Union Boulevard hit the right rear of the police cruiser.

The officer was outside the vehicle at the time of the crash, and was not injured. Police said the cruiser’s rear passenger side was severely damaged.

Police said the driver of the van was identified as James Finn. He was not injured.

Finn was evaluated and arrested for DUI and other traffic-related charges, according to police.
