Female bear shot, left on trail near Sunlight Mountain Resort

Wildlife officers are investigating the death of a female bear found shot to death on a trail near Sunlight Mountain Resort, her cub lingering near the carcass.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers say it’s a crime to shoot a bear and leave the carcass to waste.

The Post Independent reports that the cub was uninjured. It was successfully captured by wildlife officers and will be released into the wild.

In a separate incident, officers are also asking for information regarding a five-point bull elk that was found dead in the Owl Creek area, between Aspen and Snowmass Village, on Sept. 24.

Officers determined that the animal had been shot during archery season. The bull survived the initial shot, wandering to the Owl Creek area where it expired, officers said.
