Kids raise more than $20,000 for Kilker family at fair

Children competing at the county fair in Keenesburg have raised over $20,000 for the family that lost a father and son in an apparent murder-suicide last week.

KMGH-TV reports that 10 children voluntarily donated a portion of the sale of their 4H project animals to the Kilker family at the South East Weld County Fair on Saturday. In addition, Payton Bellm’s hog was sold and re-sold seven times for a total of $11,500. Hogs usually only sell for a few hundred dollars.

Donations at food booths brought in another $1,500.

Investigators believe 42-year-old Shawn David Kilker shot and killed his 14-year-old son Keith before killing himself Tuesday during a standoff with SWAT officers. They were trying to arrest him for allegedly kidnapping his estranged wife.
