Memorial Day festivities kicked off in Colorado Springs Monday with commemoration ceremonies at Evergreen Cemetery.

Folks gathered together to remember the fallen soldiers and those that still fight for our freedoms to this very day.

Flags were waving, soldiers were saluting and the community was standing together-with their hands over their hearts, honoring those who sacrificed their lives for our country.

“We just need to make sure that people are aware of everybody’s sacrifices and contributions to America,” said Col. Bart with The 10th U.S. Calvary Buffalo Soldiers Inc.

According to Bart, it’s because of these dedicated men and women who put their lives on the line for us and continue to do so everyday.

“Some get to come back, but others don’t get to come back. People need to remember that,” said Toni Lewis, U.S. Air Force veteran.

Monday’s commemoration ceremonies also brought together all military branches under a united front.

“All of our military people make sacrifices that go above and beyond what they’re used to seeing on a daily basis,” said Col. Bart.

Ultimately, freedom isn’t free, Bart said, and Memorial Day is much more than just paying our respects to our fallen heroes.

“We’re sent into a hellish situation not by our own choice in defense of our country and the goals of our country to keep us free,” Bart finished off by saying.

According to Bart, these men and women are instruments of war. They may not agree with the war itself, but they go overseas and fight to defend our freedoms.
