I-25 reopens south of Pueblo after dust storm

Interstate 25 south of Pueblo has reopened after a dangerous dust storm. Windy conditions and several crashes Monday afternoon forced Colorado State Patrol (CSP) to shut down southbound lanes while they got drivers to safety and cleaned up oil and antifreeze from a rig that was leaking.

The road was closed southbound from mile markers 90-94 for several hours. That’s from about Lime Road to Pueblo Boulevard.

Northbound I-25 remained open during the storm.

Photos on social media showed extremely low visibility in the area Monday morning. CSP said several crashes were reported in the area.

Troopers say if you ever encounter a dust storm on the interstate, slow down and get to safety. Never stop on the highway.

“The best thing to do is stay in your vehicle. We do not want people wandering around the interstate because cars are coming down the interstate. They don’t know there is a wreck ahead, ” said Bill Nemick, Assistant Fire Chief for Pueblo Fire Dept.

Troopers say there are seeing more dust storms in that area south of Pueblo recently. If you travel through that area, use extra caution when it is windy.
