Former cycling champ Stetina injured in bike crash

Authorities say U.S. Bicycling Hall of Famer Dale Stetina was critically injured in a bike accident in Lefthand Canyon near Boulder.

The Colorado State Patrol says Stetina crashed when he tried to avoid an SUV that pulled into his lane Saturday afternoon. Patrol Cpl. Heather Cobler tells The Denver Post “he swerved and braked so hard he went over the handlebars.”

The 57-year-old — a member of the 1976 and 1980 U.S. Olympic teams — won more than 200 domestic and international bike races during a career from 1965 to 1983, according to a biography on the hall of fame’s website.

Authorities say he was wearing a helmet but appears to have suffered a head injury. Rich Sheehan, spokesman for Boulder Community Hospital, says Stetina is in critical condition.
