Search for an aggressive bear closes trails in Bear Creek Park

Division of Wildlife officers are searching for an aggressive bear near Bear Creek Regional Park West of Colorado Springs. Until it is found, the trails west of 21st street in the park are closed.

The bear is said to have approached people using the trails several times Monday. Officers said the bear would not retreat even after being yelled at, and continued to come closer and closer until it was within 10 feet of at least one jogger.

Officers are asking the public to avoid the area while they attempt to find the bear. Barricades and closures will be in place until they can locate it and assess the bear’s behavior.

If the bear has lost its fear of people and is determined to be a risk to human health and safety, Division of Wildlife officials said it will be put down.
